In the year 2005, two punk kids by the name of Gomes and Joris, founded a clubnight celebrating all that’s good in hip-hop, in the process rejecting the modern urban culture of bling and occasionally mumbling to their good-selves, “things ain’t what they used to be”.

So they invited a little-known DJ by the name of Q-Bert to spread the righteous message to the misled inhabitants of Aberdeen, that hip-hop doesn’t need Kanye West, Neptune or Dre-produced beats to be good. Yeah, these guys can make fat joints, but what about the others? What about Kool Keith, Amir ?uestlove Thompson, Nu-Mark and Thes One?

Joining Q-Bert in spreading “The Message” were a host of acts highlighting the various elements that make up hip-hop culture:

Acts so far: DJ Q-Bert (Thud Rumble), Prime Cuts (Scratch Perverts), Freakmenoovers (Glasgow), Fingathing, Rob Swift (X-Ecutioners), Rodney P (BBC 1Xtra), Lo-Tek (Big Dada), Ugly Duckling, Giant Panda (Tres Records).

Wax has no home, instead utilising Aberdeen’s various venues depending on the guest. We would like to thank Kef, Snafu and The Lemon Tree for so kindly hosting our gatherings on various occasions.

THE WAX DJ’s:

Dee J A’la Fu (Chief Resident)

North, way north went a kid by the name of Dee J A’la Fu. Learning his trade and reaching such diverse places as California, Montenegro, London, Israel, Australia, Scotland, N.Y.C. and Hawaii, A'La Fu has performed, recorded and released material since ‘93. Inspired early on by touring, supporting and sharing the stage with the likes of Gil Scott Heron, Schooly D, DJ Krush and De La Soul, he soon became involved in numerous projects from DJ workshops, to guest spots on radio shows such as Ninja Tune’s ‘Solid Steel’, the BBC’s Selector/World Service programme and their digital off-shoot station 1 Xtra. Mr. Fu has also illustrated the art of DJing via the wonder of television alongside Hip-Hop pioneer/originator DJ Kool Herc, competed against the Scratch Perverts at the first ever DMC Team Finals and later performed for the Perverts at 2002’s Glastonbury festival. Recent runnings have included close work with the Big Dada / Ninja Tune record labels, remix duties for Coldcut and Saul Williams, a contribution to Big Dada’s ‘Extra Yard’ compilation and of course more DJing, including live stints with Roots Manuva, New Flesh, Infinite Livez and plenty of worldwide touring shenanigans with New York’s Mike Ladd. He’s also found time to turn his well received series of ‘Radio Skool’ mix CD’s into a monthly club/live showcase, entertaining special guests as diverse as Prince Paul, Andy Votel, Roots Manuva, The Sugarhill Gang, Lady Sovereign and Keb Darge.

Giles Walker

Bags of records and bags of talent, Giles is also resident at The Tunnels in his Kitty Litter guise.

Kid Bell

Kid Bell has risen fast from early slots at local joints, Estaminet and Bar Pivo. A liking for solid underground and old skool beats, Mr Bell is a dab hand with the old turntable trickery. Also resident at the city’s soul/broken beat/disco get-down, The Goodfoot.

DJ Gomes

Founder and poppy of Wax. DJing for almost seven years, Gomes has embraced the rise of new technology and can be found in front of iTunes for days on end! General Manager of Aberdeen uber-club Snafu, Gomes’s (2nd) favourite club in the whole, widest, entire world is Fabric!

Mayhem

Not forgetting our charismatic host, all the way from Philly.
