Following on from Audiobiography, 'Blissphemy' is to be the last album for Glasgow based Damaged Goodz. After 10 years in the game he felt the time was right to hang up his gloves, but does this album deliver the blows?
Not only will you be smacked left and right from the excellent lyrics, you will be knocked out with an uppercut of bangin' beats!
Produced, mixed, written and performed by Damaged Goodz, with a little help from Big Div, Respek BA, DJ Zeeny and Natalie Thomas, this album starts with a brooding sinister feel as 'Angel Arrival', which includes samples from the film Dogma, kicks off proceedings.
As 'Blissphemy' takes you on a Journey of a fallen angel searching for redemption it becomes apparent that a lot of love has gone into this album. He obviously wanted to go out with a bang.
Tracks 'Blissphemy' and 'Ashes Scatter' are excellent examples of some of the best that Scottish hip-hop has to offer. Everything about these two tracks are excellent. The beats are strong and the lyrics sublime. 'MTV Cribs' is also a good track with a funny piss take of the show of the same name. As he takes 'MTV' through his home on a rough part of Glasgow he warns them with lyrics like 'watch out for those kids, they'll brandish their chibs, put them in your ribs, leave you looking silly when they boost with your shit'.
Respek BA steps up on track 'Dark Cloud Country' which is about all the shit happening in Scotland like the 'gunning down of children' and 'religious bigotry'. This is a heavy track but well worth a listen and covers a lot of problems happening in our country.
'Skullcrush' is a track that will divide people's opinion. This is obviously influenced for his love for System of a Down and is a strange addition to the album. Being his last album I think he decided to experiment on a track or two and in a strange way it sort of works.
Things get back to normal with 'Hawners' which features Big Div and 'New Horizons' with amazing vocals from Natalie Thomas. With the dark moody tracks before it, this is like a breath of fresh air and gives the impression that there is light at the end of the tunnel for our 'angel'.
This is an excellent album that left me feeling the same way as when I finished watching the original 'The Wicker Man' film. It kept me intrigued, a little confused at times but on the whole is wildly entertaining.
